Marc Quintyn

Marc Quintyn

President

I moved with my family to the Washington DC area in 1989, when I accepted a job at the IMF. I am happy and proud to be one of the "founding members" of VIW-WFC when we decided in 1994 to "resurrect" the club. Since then I have been spending a great deal of my spare time for the club, just because I love to do it and believe in its usefulness. As a board member, you can say that I "climbed the ranks," starting as member at large, followed by some 10 years as the tresarurer and since 2007, the president. My objectives are to provide social and cultural entertainment for the Flemish community in the greater Washington DC area and for all those who have an interest in our community. I am extremely pleased that our efforts are being received so well by our membership. In my "other" spare time, I like to bike with friends, do other sports, read or undertake economic research.

Along with Marc and my wife Els, I am one of the three remaining founding members of Vlamingen in de Wereld - Washington Flanders Club. As an IT guy, I was the obvious choice for all computer related chores back in 1994. Thus, I spent the next years updating our member database, preparing our quarterly newsletter VIWKE, and keeping track of event registrations. I was happy to delegate these time consuming tasks after becoming the president of our club in 1999! Leading VIW-WFC for eight years was an exciting and rewarding experience, and  it even earned me a "Leopoldsorde ereteken" awarded by the Belgian Ambassador in Washington. To relieve the stress caused by my work at the IMF's IT department, I run marathons and cycle quite often together with a few VIW members.

Treasurer

Thirty years in the Washington area has moved me up to the rank of senior citizen.

I obviously focus on the interests of this demographic group but I delight in the growing numbers of young families and my new title as Oma of their little ones.

As treasurer of WFC-VIW, I can assure you that I manage our account and your membership money much better than the current investment banks and mortgage companies. We strive to offer our members interesting cultural and social activities at bargain prices thanks to the volunteer input of everybody on the board.

Since the inception of the club, I have spent countless hours designing virtually all invitations for VIW-WFC activities, often with the help of my daughter Lisa who shares my passion for art but usefully combines it with a less shared passion for computers. This role soon earned me the title of "artistic director"  among the board members . It is not only VIW invitations that I like to make look pretty. When I am not spending my time traveling for the World Bank to far away places like Eastern Europe or South Asia, I paint, renovate the house, redesign the yard, etc. You can check out my paintings at www.elsforger.com.

Koen Vanwinckel

 Koen Vanwinckel

Has left Belgium in 1992 to start an overseas telecom career with Alcatel-Lucent.  Has settled in Northern Virginia (Reston, VA) since early 2000 after long-term assignments in Singapore and shorter stays in Norway, Germany and Brazil.  Has joined VIW-WFC Committee in 2004 as "young blood" to focus on database administration, distribution of emails and family-specific activities (f.i. Saint-Nicholas event).  Enjoys discovering new places, outdoors activities (bicycling, hiking, sailing, snowboarding, ...) and - most important - good times with family and friends.

Geert Van Brandt

Geert Van Brandt Studies and an international career took my home from Brussels to Bologna, Tokyo, Washington, Malmö, Copenhagen, Lyon, Paris, Ghent, St Louis, and since 1994: Bethesda. It seems we'll remain here as long-timers. We can think of worse places to get stuck. At VIW's beckoning: Culture, the Arts, Performances and lodging for performers.

Favorite hobbies:gardening, hiking, swimming, photos, and leisurely tandem rides with the lovely Leslie.

Luce De Peuter

Together with my husband, Albert Tejano and our three kids we moved to the Washington DC area 22 years ago. Before that, I worked for 10 years in Manila. During all of these 32 years, I worked at the Belgian Embassy. A VIW-WFC board member since 5 years, I am in a good position to be the liaison between VIW-WFC on the one hand, and the Belgian diplomatic community here in DC on the other. I really enjoy serving as a board member.

Veronique Vercammen

If you told me in 2006 that I would move to Washington with my husband Patrick and my daughter Margaux, I would have thought this an absolute impossibility. But suddenly it happened: Patrick accepted a job offer in Washington. After fourteen years of working as a nurse in the Imelda hospital in Bonheiden, I was equally happy for a change and offered the hospital director my resignation. I always loved to travel and this was of course a unique opportunity to discover a new part of the world. As a-stay-home mom with some more flexible time at hand, I was pleased to join the VIW-WFC kern. I'll focus my energy and attention on the website to offer you up-to-date information on all the activities and latest news of our club.

Karen Wouters

I first came to DC in the academic year 2004 - 2005 as a visiting PhD student. A friend of mine introduced me to the salsa dancing, and that's how I met Omar. I had to return to Belgium after my visiting position had ended, but by then I already knew that DC would play a much larger role in my life. In 2006 I returned and was fortunate to find a job at the Robert H Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland so that we could settle in the area with the, by now, 5 kids. Omar and I still share our passion for salsa. Besides that, I enjoy getting together with friends as well as hiking, climbing, swimming, etc with the kids. When I joined the board in the spring of 2009, I was asked together with Veronique to take the lead in rejuvenating the club. Being the youngest board member (which I guess I am) will hopefully help me in getting my mission accomplished.
